Description: An existing dwelling located in Stratford-upon-Avon was in desperate need of rejuvenation. For many years the property had functioned as a local B&B offer, meaning that many of the internal spaces did not conform to typical family living and required modernisation.

The client sought high end residential architects in Stratford-upon-Avon and consequently appointed Unity Architects to guide them through the applicable RIBA work stages.

The project required a whole-house refurbishment, encompassing internal alterations, a rear extension, basement conversion, loft conversion and roof extensions.

The relationship between old and new is essential on these types of projects. ‘Bolt-on’ architecture is avoided at all costs. Unity Architects focused on harmoniously weaving the existing spaces with the proposed spaces, to generate a coherent vision and a sequence of spaces that flowed naturally.

The rear-wing became a focal point of the project. The existing spaces suffered from a poor arrangement, were incohesive and presented a low-quality, cellular environment. The client wanted to demolish the entire rear-wing and replace with new construction. This is where the visionary capabilities of Unity Architects came to the forefront, to assist the client with the exploration of design possibilities and develop an inspiring architectural concept.

A new single-storey projection replaced the old sequence of cellular and derelict rear-wing structures. The architectural enhancements were significant, delivering a critical uplift in building footprint, redefining the spatial order and creating a large, airy, dynamic space that the client craved.

The overarching project required a responsive architectural skillset, to attend to the varying instances of upgrading existing spaces, adding entirely new portions of construction and creatively converting existing spaces. Unity Architects was able to demonstrate its proficiency as house extension architects and loft conversion architects within this single project. The design-led approach resulted in extensive enhancements throughout the scheme, including aspects of efficiency, functionality, poetics, quality of daylight, drama, experience and delight.

Throughout the building, the architectural interventions have been expertly woven with the existing building, presenting a beautiful platform for future family moments.
