Description: A delightful homeowner project for a professional couple in Leamington Spa, conceived during the C-19 Pandemic, with home office and quality of space as fundamental project drivers.
An underutilised, integrated double-garage formed the basis of this project. It is a common start point for many homeowner clients where an existing garage becomes a dumping ground for all kinds of household equipment and random objects.
The client had identified the existing garage footprint as a region of growth to extend the fabric of the main living spaces. In tandem with this strategy, Unity Architects proposed a minor garage extension to enable the creation of a new façade, setting the tone of an entirely new and impressive architectural style for this dwelling.
The client appointed Unity Architects for its reputation as high end residential architects and throughout the project, reinforced the requirement for a design-led response, to raise the standards of design. The architectural response of Unity Architects led to the creation of a bespoke saw-tooth façade. The façade purposefully controls inwards and outwards views from the professional home office, mitigating unwanted inward views from the street whilst encouraging outwards views to the private garden space.
At the rear of the home, Unity Architects repurposed existing spaces and made use of the existing foundation arrangement to establish a modern, open-plan kitchen and living space. This strategy balanced the creation of desirable architecture in tandem with construction cost efficiency.
A feature oriel window presents a beautiful opportunity for family members to dwell whilst engaging with the private rear garden space. Equally, the oriel window bench seat contributes to social gatherings as part of the new living space.
A beautiful and rarely seen linear Geobrick from EH Smith, sourced from Holland, separates this building from the crowd. What began as a tired double-integrated garage frontage, is now an elegant, contemporary and slick dwelling, fully equipped to perform as a modern family home.
